Additionally, prosthetics ranging from aging make-up, numerous scenes in full body casts, and of course Frida's omnipresent unibrow were heaped upon Hayek. Not to mention that she has to convey the horrible physical pain Kahlo endured as a result of a crippling childhood accident. She mesmerizingly portrays Frida throughout all stages of her life – young girl, budding woman, old and dying. The part shows that Hayek is much more than just a pretty face. You have to embrace the character for everything that she was without any judgement and throw yourself completely, completely into it."Īshley Judd and Salma Hayek in Frida Speaking of throwing herself completely into something, it's apparent that the role of Frida may easily be the most challenging role Hayek has ever undertaken. Otherwise I would have been betraying the character. It's organic to the subject matter and it was absolutely necessary. So it makes you feel less naked because it's not gratuitous. Because in this particular circumstance it is very organic to the story I'm telling and incredibly important to really tell you who this woman was. I cannot tell you how mortifying that was than actually being completely naked in bed with another woman. I would have to push myself out of the trailer everyday. "I'll tell you, there's nudity in this film but for example I did Wild Wild West and while I was never naked in Wild Wild West I felt a lot more naked and embarrassed wearing that stupid costume. ![]() While there's a lot of sensuality running throughout Frida, the role is definitely far removed from that of a sex symbol. These films predominantly featured her in racy sex symbol type of roles. Most American audiences are familiar with Hayek from her turn in more action-oriented films like Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Fled. To this end the film is rife with themes of loyalty and betrayal or as Hayek herself puts it, "To me it's about unconditional love and endurance, if you have to sum it up in one word." Ironically, endurance is something Hayek has in spades. ![]() At its roots, however, it's really about finding the human quality within these epic characters, the types of qualities that everybody can relate to. Sure, on the surface the film chronicles the epic lives of Frida, her husband Diego Rivera, and the colorful cast of characters that surrounded them during their lifetime. ![]() More than seven years in the making, Hayek not only stars in the lead role, but also produced the film, which is much more than just the story of famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Salma later admitted that she just really needed money to pay her rent.Hayek's latest film, Frida is her most recent passion. The answer is far less mysterious than you might have expected at this point, after all the snake-inner-strength symbolism. It's hard to argue with the results: the scene turned out amazing and became one of the most iconic (yes!) moments of From Dusk Till Dawn.īut you may be wondering: how did the actress conjure so much inner strength to overcome her greatest fear all by herself while most shrinks take ages to do something about people's phobias? As weird as it may sound, it worked!Īnd in a different way than you'd expect: Salma found out that sometimes, snakes represent a person's inner strength… And basically brainwashed herself into ignoring the snake and imagining herself dancing with her inner strength! The actress decided to conduct some research to help change her attitude toward snakes. Salma, however, kept herself together and decided to deal with her fears face to face. It was not initially included in the script, and the idea came as a total surprise - or, rather, shock - to Salma.īut at that point, Tarantino and Rodriguez were unstoppable: they told Salma they'd find another actress who wouldn't have an issue with snakes.
